Happiness is what you make of it - for some reason studying doesn't really yield it. I won't make this long - I've been sitting in front of a computer screen, typing away all day. I'm writing a paper about peat bog ecosystems.
One thing I did discover was that, to alleviate the 3 o'clock pm tired moment, when all you want to do is sleep all of a sudden, eat an apple. For some reason, the sugar rush provided by this is enough to boost you back up to work through until dinner.
Successfully been substituting tea for my coffee. I still require the caffeine jolt, only I feel a lot better after drinking tea. I had this lovely Korean ginseng tea today with lunch.
My mother is addicted to decorating shows. I believe that they're the equivalent of adult soma - they get you addicted with catchy tag lines with some type of time restriction to add suspense: "Will Laurie finish the room before Roseanne gets home?", and then throw in bright colours and clean lines to please your eye. You spend so much time watching these shows that you fail to notice the decrepit house lying about you in shambles. Instead of tearing your eyes away, you live in this fantastic daydream that your "spaces" are truly as gorgeous as the ones on television, as they are the only ones you ever see, while wasting valuable time that could have been spent on your own home repairs.
On the other hand, if you do happen to catch Trading Spaces, check out that Carter fellow! He's handy and - he should be a model.
My eyes feel bloated and tired - I think it's time to get away from this computer screen. Well, after I tinker with the colours a bit more...
"Trading Blogs?"
I don't think so.

My roses are finally dying (the ones G. gave me at formal) so I hung them up from my curtains. Red ones turn a sinister blackened hue - whereas pink ones turn a mottled yellow as they dry out.
I've so much work approaching so rapidly - and the best I can do is to turn my head and look in the other direction - towards the sun - and begin to walk backwards through the mess.

I finished Aftermath during my ecosystem class today - it was group presentations on various ecosystems around the world and I wasn't interested. I feel badly as the reason for my ignorance of the topic was due to the fact that he's not testing us on it - those really shouldn't be my priorities. But this close to exams, very little else matters. Something we're supposed to learn voluntarily does not seem quite as important - it's all about delegating time.
There's this gorgeous fog gathering up around my house - making it seem as though it was one of those ancient moor houses in Devonshire.
England - soon.
Ever notice how, in rainy weather, the bus makes a huge tidal wave of water every time it hits a puddle? I was admiring the force of the spray on the way home today, along the parkway. The snow has melting off the grass leaving it this sickly greenish yellow hue. I love that colour.
Gotta go!

Thursday... My Thursdays are pretty busy.
It's amazing how well you can perform in a day without any food. There wasn't much to eat round here except some old mouldy bread - so I went to school with my tummy rumbling. Funny how if you skip one meal, the rest are easier to skip. The day in the "lab" (if that's what it's technically called - more just a couple of computers in a room) - was good - went by quickly - we got to digitizing the videos that are going into the final product, which is neat. I got a sense of actual accomplishment. Always a plus with every job! Is digitizing a word? Doubt it.
Had a pita, went to english class -where we reviewed HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY. Kill me now. Please. Wait, too late - I already sat through the freakin lecture.
I'm reading this book - Aftermath, by Peter Robinson, for my english class. So far I can't enjoy it - it's just too dark and graphic - lots of sexual deviance and frightening rape/abduction/serial murder scenarios. Not really my definition of entertainment. Rather, it's a gripping read in a way because you have this need to see justice done. Still - I'd prefer to be reading something else right now. I have this annoying feeling I'm being stalked by a rogue biology teacher - when I was walking home from the bus - it was so dark and wisps of fog trailing mysteriously by me.
Voyage of the Beagle awaits. As does Deadeye Dick, the Kurt Vonnegut book I got for Christmas and haven't found time to read.
Why is it that I can't find time to get any work done?
Why???
Oh - and the newest development of teasing/gossip - if you keep up with the ZooCrew blog - apparently I look like Mandy Moore in a Walk to Remember. Having seen all of 10 minutes of this sappy horrible movie - I feel compelled to agree (it's my haircut - and the bangs...) but honestly I don't want to look like her. Sometimes I wish I looked glamourous - tanned with cropped blonde hair or something. Bleh. Not a child!
Don't really care in the end. It's who I am and what I like that really matters :)
BUGS!
Funny how I've accepted that so easily. I'm happy admitting that I'll be an entomologist someday - and hopefully work with fossilized arthropods. I'm not certain but I feel as though that means I'm passionate about it - when I've reached this happy acceptance of it. Who knows.
The shadow knows.
End transmission.

Interesting day at school I suppose - I'm so glad the sun is up early in the morning when I get up - it makes such a massive difference. When you get up before dawn there's something so weary about the rest of the day that ensues....
Class wasn't too thrilling - but I spent a nice while with Shan doing some work and chatting at Starbucks, (where else?) I'm trying to get off coffee as I can feel it gradually burning a hole through my stomach lining - I also think it's due to the fact that I chew my advil and I've been getting more headaches recently. Bah to stress!
Shan and I agreed that it would have been an exciting life to live in the 1700s and 1800s as a naturalist - I couldn't think of a more exciting career. I'm always reminded of Stephen Maturin in the Patrick O'Brien books and I totally admire his courage and ability to cope with the changing world around him. I love the tough lifestyle, and I feel as though I could easily adapt to life aboard an old frigate, perform surgeries and pick bugs. Mostly the thrill of being an explorer- being the first one to make these discoveries that shook up the way in which we see the progression and pattern of all living things.
I'm daydreaming again. Give me a break - I don't have time to do this often.
Meg's coming over tonight - she's kicked out of her house for bug killers - oh wait that's her now on the phone.
Oooo take-out tonight - I'm excited!!
Yay for junk!

Starting up anew tonight - I wish sometimes I could actually read by candlelight. You know, the atmosphere is far more conducive to what I'm actually reading - being always a subject of considerable breadth of history. I feel as though the world is so full... full of people pushing their way to the top, not stopping to realize what they forget along the way. Nobody will read my blog, least nobody who does not know me, as I'm not terribly original. Nobody really is. Actually, there's a song about that. See?
It's a dreadful shame, overpopulation. Maybe enough of a shame that living in the past wouldn't be so bad. I wouldn't be able to do what I do, and know what I know. But the truth is, idea wouldn't be unoriginal, and I could exist the way I liked. Or could I? There's also the danger of plague.
When's the next plague due to arrive? I think sooner rather than later, and I'm an optimist. Reason being, that we're all crammed in so tightly together - it's about bloody time.
Best of luck with that. I'll be studying the fleas that'll be spreading it. Hopefully it won't do as much damage as I think it will be.
I'm trying to write an essay comparing The Hound of the Baskervilles to the modern pastiche of The Moor for my english lit class. Hit a writer's block. Got to thinking of the attitudes towards history.
I rather like history. It's a shame it's not as interesting as entomology. When their powers combine...
(Back to work - enough of this procrastinating stuff)
