Doing better
Funny how when the weather improves, so does a person's temperament. I am no exception - and I feel much better, overall. It's hot and sunny here, and I can't get enough of being outside. Except for blackflies - against whom I have sworn DEATH. They must DIE. I have no qualms about ecological effects - they're such a horrible pain. Even with my crazily expensive bug jacket on, they still get in, and still start nibbling away. Nothing will stop them.
Fieldwork is getting slow since the larvae haven't hatched, and we're out of stuff to do. Which is nice - leaves a lot more time to gather thoughts and the like. We still have 8 people in this house, although they're moving down the street on Monday (woot) - even though more people will arrive.
I sort of enjoy living in the middle of nowhere. For one, people are strangely friendly. Everywhere I go, I get into long conversations with people (the lady at the post office is especially nice, but so is the grocery store lady and the two ladies in the liqeur store). Everyone is really sweet, and very talkative. I'm told this is an Atlantic Canada thing.

The park is getting nicer too, and the water should be receding from flooding. It's like living permanently in cottage country. Melissa and Jesse, our roomates from Dal, are really nice, although the other students from Dal are sort of antisocial and work all the time - going to bed early - I guess they just don't know us well. It's not exactly a party atmosphere - and I can't drink anyway, since I'm on antibiotics. (I got an infection from having so many bug bites). There's a small shack about a half hour walk from here that sells gigantic "small" ice cream cones for 2$ (with tax) - it's very sweet. I'm also running again, thanks to Melissa, who normally runs 15 K a day... (crazy!!)
Yesterday, we had nothing better to do, so Antoine and I went on a super long road trip to Peggy's Cove, stopping to look around Lunenburg along the way:
Anyway - we just heard that Keji has an adjunct park on the ocean where we can take surfing lessons - I think this may be a go if it's not super pricey.
Meg: thanks soooo much for the care package. Candy is wonderful.
I hope to be downloading some of our photos onto yahoo - but tis slowgoing with this dialup connection. I'll let you all know when I get that hooked up!

Isolation is not for me.
Bahhhh Internet Explorer deleted my long post - AHH.
Anyway I'm alive and ok - I miss everyone. Caledonia Nova Scotia is barely a village. So much isolation. So many derelict cars as lawn furniture.
the park is nice but half underwater. Makes for interesting field work.. (Canoes up to a tree)....
For the next week I'm sharing a house with 10 others - so it'll be hard to reach me (I'm tying up the phone line) - but after it quietens down.
I keep hoping my field work is sufficient but I hear other people talking about 10 hours a day - (whhaaat??) we average about 6 or 7.
I miss you all!
