So it's the end of November, I know, I've been out of commission...
The truth is, I've been avoiding this blog. It all started in Sept, when the girls pointed out that they Google people who they know. I do this too... (guess it's not a secret anymore!) But if I Google myself, the blog shows up!! I guess I put my full name in there somewhere, but I can't find it now to delete it. I've been hoping that if I ignore the blog, it will stop popping up when I google myself. Unluckily, it won't go away. I guess I'll have to root out the problem and find my name. It's in there, somewhere.
Gosh darnit.
What is new? Hard to sum up 3 months. Fredericton's been life as usual, I guess. I've been doing presentations left right and centre, and I started writing papers, which is a good thing. I need some pubs (publications, for you non-scientists) to qualify for some good future money. I'm starting to get mucho stressed about finding a PhD. It's SO HARD TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!! I think I've ruled out going back to systematics (sorry, for those of you who enjoyed my frank discussions about weevil adeagus..es... adeagi?). Forest entomology's great, um... medical confuses me, and forensics would be smelly. So I really don't know. I would like to do some collecting though in the tropics, and will try to make time to go with the museum folks sometime soon...
I went to a conference in Montreal this last ... weekend? Last weekend. It was good, I guess. The details are a bit fuzzy. My presentation went well, although apparently I said rather ditzy nervous things like "Go me!" in the middle of my talk. I love the way other profs/students sound so intellectual and formal, and I can't pull it off.
I've been saying "Like" since I was 6, so it's hard to ditch the valley-girl thing now. It worked in Legally Blonde, but I'm a redhead, and "Entomologically redhead" isn't the kind of thing that would sell.
Not only that, but the night after our talks, we all (as a lab) proceeded to get a bit hammered at an Eithiopian restaurant, before going to a fancy President's reception and then went to a bar. I'm loud normally, and I got louder. To be honest I can't remember things, but needless to say, people I don't even know where saying "hi" the next day, so I think I have cause for concern. Great first impression, moron... So basically, for a phd, I have to find a lab/supervisor where nobody was at that conference to see my shenanigans, and where they don't know anyone who was. Which is impossible, unless I switch to basket-weaving or interpretive dance. On the plus side, I'm getting better at dealing with embarrassment. Just smile and nod, and it will all be over soon... On the plus side, my hair looked nice.
So for the record, I'm alive.
And I know Kung-fu.
Sort of.
Hey, who's coming to my seminar at the museum??? Dec 19th - should be fun!!

I promise!
Full of entomo-tastic adventures... with me!
